The University of Hartford, commonly known as UHart of simply UHA, is a private, independent, nonsectarian, coeducational university located in West Hartford, which is a town located in Hartford County, in the US state of Connecticut that was incorporated in 1854. According to the United States Census Bureau, Hartford has a total area of 22.4 square miles, of which 22 square miles is land and 0.4 square miles is water, having a population estimated at a number of more than 60 000 inhabitants (2005).
UHA traces its roots back in 1877, when The Hartford Art School commenced operation, founded by a group of local women, including Olivia Langdon Clemens, Mark Twain’s wife, and Harriet Beecher Stowe, first starting under the name of Hartford Society for Decorative Art, being chartered in 1957, when the Hartford Art School, Hillyer College and The Hart School, which was founded in 1920, by Julius Hartt and Moshe Paranov, merged.

The athletic teams from UHA are known as the Hartford Hawks, who compete in 18 varsity sports (9 men and 9 women), in the Division I America East Conference, including basketball, baseball, golf, soccer, tennis, volleyball and indoor/outdoor track. Hartford’s Sport Center, where the Hawks play most of their home games, is a large, modern structure, among the most renowned facilities on campus, containing the Chase Family Arena, the Hawk Café, the Reich Family Pavilion, the Student Health Center, the campus gym, and the Mary Baker Stanley Pool.
